The Science Behind
ImaginationGYM®
ImaginationGYM® is built on over 20 years of development rooted in cognitive neuroscience, educational theory, and the practical experience of hundreds of field test sites across Ireland, Europe and North America.
An Educational Methodology Built on Research
"ImaginationGYM® is an educational methodology designed to empower teachers, parents, childcare and clinical practitioners to assist in the education and emotional development of the children in their care. It is based around a series of audio adventures designed to stimulate a listener's imagination and intelligences and to integrate the left and right hemispheres of the brain which encourages whole brain learning."
Integrating Both Hemispheres
The brain is divided into two hemispheres. The left hemisphere specialises in logic, analysis and rational thinking. The right hemisphere specialises in creativity, intuition and imaginative thinking. Harmony between the two hemispheres is essential for both learning and for full brain potential.
Traditional educational approaches tend to over-rely on left-hemisphere analytical processing. ImaginationGYM® is specifically designed to activate right-hemisphere creative processing and integrate both hemispheres during the imaginative exercises.
The structure of the imagination exercises encourages use of the whole brain during the imaginative process. This integration is what distinguishes ImaginationGYM® from conventional educational tools — it is genuinely whole-brain by design, not by aspiration.
Left Hemisphere
Logic · Analysis · Rational thinking · Language · Sequencing
Right Hemisphere
Creativity · Intuition · Imagination · Spatial awareness · Emotion
Whole Brain Integration
The goal of every ImaginationGYM® session — harmonious engagement of both hemispheres
Multiple Intelligence Theory
Howard Gardner of Harvard University proposed that human intelligence is not a single measure but a collection of eight distinct intelligences. ImaginationGYM® sets out to develop all eight throughout its programme series.
Visual / Spatial
The capacity to think in images and pictures, to visualise accurately and abstractly. The imagination exercises are primarily designed to develop this intelligence.
Musical
Sensitivity to pitch, melody, rhythm and tone. The carefully chosen music in each session actively develops musical intelligence.
Verbal / Linguistic
Ability to use language effectively, both written and spoken. Narrative and storytelling in the adventures builds this intelligence directly.
Logical / Mathematical
Capacity for inductive and deductive reasoning, problem solving. The consequence-based decision making in adventures develops this.
Interpersonal
Ability to understand and interact effectively with others. Group listening and discussion of adventures develops empathy and social understanding.
Intrapersonal
Capacity for self-awareness and self-regulation. The private, self-directed nature of the imagination exercises develops this deeply.
Bodily / Kinesthetic
Ability to use the body skilfully. Physical expression activities following listening engage this intelligence.
Naturalist
Ability to recognise and classify objects in the natural world. Many adventure worlds, including nature-based ones, develop this intelligence.
Assisted Imagination Techniques (AIT)
At the heart of ImaginationGYM® is a set of Assisted Imagination Techniques — a carefully developed set of principles that guide how the audio adventures are structured and how children are encouraged to engage with them.
These principles are not arbitrary — each one has been developed through extensive field testing and refined over two decades of real-world use in classrooms, homes, hospitals, and clinical settings.
Creative Freedom
The child has complete freedom to imagine whatever they choose within the structure provided. No two children will create the same story.
Assistance in Accessing Imagination
The neutral guide helps the child enter the imaginative state without directing the content of their imagination.
Guidance in Structuring Imagination
For children who struggle with open-ended creativity, gentle structure is provided without restricting the imaginative space.
Translating Imagination into Reality
The Activity Book and creative exercises help children express and externalise what they have imagined.
Relaxation and Fun
Learning should be enjoyable. Relaxation in the process is a prerequisite for deep learning and permanent change.
Process over Outcome
Achievement is in the doing, not the result. This fundamental shift transforms children's relationship with learning.
Developing Visualisation Skills
Repeated practice builds the ability to create vivid mental imagery — a foundational cognitive skill.
Repetition for Permanent Change
Like a gym, regular repetition is what creates lasting neurological changes rather than temporary enhancement.
"Research from Pennsylvania State University (2007) showed young children taught self-regulated behaviour can outperform children of higher IQ in reading, writing and maths."
Pennsylvania State University, 2007
Self-Regulated Behaviour
ImaginationGYM® achieves self-regulated behaviour through three interconnected mechanisms: respect for peer boundaries during group sessions, increasing periods of attention and focus, and the development of listening skills.
A study published in Scientific American Mind by psychologist Clancy Blair showed that children taught self-regulated behaviour skills outperformed children of higher IQ in core academic areas. This is the kind of meta-cognitive development that ImaginationGYM® builds.
The approach is particularly effective for hyperactive children, who benefit from the building up of listening skills through progressively longer periods of focused engagement.
Key Thinkers Behind the Methodology
ImaginationGYM® draws on a rich tradition of educational and developmental psychology research.
Howard Gardner
Proposed the theory of Multiple Intelligences — that children have not one but eight distinct intelligence areas. ImaginationGYM® is designed to develop all eight throughout the programme series.
Lev Vygotsky
Vygotsky's concept of the Zone of Proximal Development — that children learn best when supported by a more knowledgeable other — underpins the role of parents and teachers in ImaginationGYM® sessions.
Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi
The concept of Flow — optimal experience through complete absorption in a task — describes the deep imaginative state that ImaginationGYM® is specifically designed to induce.
Clancy Blair
Blair's research demonstrating that self-regulated behaviour is a stronger predictor of academic success than IQ provides the scientific basis for ImaginationGYM®'s emphasis on focus and self-regulation.
