The Research Behind
ImaginationGYMยฎ
Over twenty years of development, field testing, and refinement โ grounded in cognitive neuroscience, educational psychology, and the practical wisdom of hundreds of classrooms and clinical settings.
Integrating Both Hemispheres
The brain is divided into two hemispheres. The left hemisphere specialises in logic, analysis and rational thinking. The right hemisphere specialises in creativity, intuition and imaginative thinking. Harmony between the two hemispheres is essential for both learning and for full brain potential.
Traditional educational approaches tend to over-rely on left-hemisphere analytical processing, squeezing out the creative, intuitive and imaginative activity that develops the whole mind. ImaginationGYMยฎ is specifically designed to activate right-hemisphere creative processing and integrate both hemispheres.
The structure of the imagination exercises encourages use of the whole brain during the imaginative process. This integration โ not left brain dominance, and not right-brain romanticism โ is what creates genuinely rounded cognitive development.
Left Hemisphere
Specialises in logic, analysis, rational thinking, language and sequencing. This is the hemisphere that traditional academic education primarily develops.
Right Hemisphere
Specialises in creativity, intuition, imaginative thinking, spatial awareness and emotional intelligence. ImaginationGYMยฎ specifically activates this hemisphere.
Whole Brain Harmony
When both hemispheres work in harmony, children access their full cognitive potential โ creative and analytical, imaginative and precise, emotionally intelligent and logically capable.
Multiple Intelligence Theory
Howard Gardner of Harvard University proposed that human beings are not endowed with a single intelligence but with eight distinct intelligences, each representing a different way of knowing the world. ImaginationGYMยฎ is explicitly designed to develop all eight throughout the programme series.
Visual / Spatial
The capacity to think in images and to visualise accurately and abstractly. Directly developed through every imagination exercise โ children build rich mental images throughout each adventure.
Musical
Sensitivity to pitch, melody, rhythm and tone. The carefully chosen music, sound effects and audio design in each session develops musical intelligence and sensitivity.
Verbal / Linguistic
Ability to use language effectively, both in speaking and writing. Narrative structure, rich vocabulary, and post-session discussion all develop verbal intelligence.
Logical / Mathematical
Capacity for inductive and deductive reasoning, cause-and-effect understanding, problem-solving. The decision-making structure within adventures develops this intelligence.
Interpersonal
Understanding and interacting effectively with others. Group sessions, peer sharing of imaginative experiences, and discussions about choices develop empathy and social awareness.
Intrapersonal
Self-awareness, self-regulation and understanding of one's own inner world. The private, self-directed nature of the imagination exercises is uniquely powerful for developing this intelligence.
Bodily / Kinesthetic
Ability to use the body skilfully. Physical expression activities following listening โ movement, gesture, acting out โ engage this intelligence.
Naturalist
Ability to recognise and classify objects in the natural environment. Nature-based adventure worlds develop sensitivity to the natural world.
Assisted Imagination Techniques (AIT)
AIT is the set of core principles that govern how ImaginationGYMยฎ exercises are structured and delivered. Each principle has been developed through extensive field testing across more than 400 sites.
Creative Freedom
The child has complete freedom to imagine whatever they choose within the structure provided. No two children will create the same story, and every child's story is valid.
Assistance in Accessing Imagination
The neutral guide helps the child enter the imaginative state. The narrator is trained to deliver guidance free of emotion or inference, minimising their impact on the listener's imagination.
Guidance in Structuring Imagination
For children who struggle with open-ended creativity, gentle structure is provided. The guided parts of the adventure give a framework without restricting the imaginative space.
Translating Imagination into Reality
The Activity Books and creative exercises help children externalise and express what has arisen in their imagination โ translating inner experience into outer creative output.
Relaxation and Fun in Learning
Learning is most effective when the learner is relaxed and engaged. Enjoyment is not incidental โ it is a precondition for deep learning and permanent change.
Process over Outcome
The sense of achievement lies in the process, not in any particular outcome. This fundamental shift transforms children's relationship with learning and removes the fear of failure.
Developing Visualisation Skills
Repeated practice in guided imagination builds the ability to create vivid, detailed mental imagery โ a foundational cognitive skill with applications across all areas of learning.
Repetition for Permanent Change
Like a physical gym, regular repetition is what creates lasting neurological changes. Occasional use provides temporary benefit; consistent practice creates permanent development.
What Is Creativity?
ImaginationGYMยฎ has a specific and important definition of creativity: "a subset of imagination with its own proviso that there must be an action to it that manifests an object or a social change in three dimensional reality. Imagination is the input, thought is the process and the outcome is an object or an action new to the world."
This definition matters because it clarifies the relationship between imagination and creativity. Pure imagination โ the internal mental activity of creating images and scenarios โ is the necessary prerequisite. But creativity requires something more: the translation of that internal experience into something that exists in the world.
Imagination
The input โ internal mental experience, images, stories, possibilities
Thought
The process โ organising, shaping, translating inner experience into form
Creativity
The outcome โ an object or action new to the world
The Activity Books in each ImaginationGYMยฎ pack are specifically designed as the bridge from imagination to creativity โ structured spaces for children to externalise and materialise what they have imagined. Every drawing, piece of writing, or creative response is an act of creativity in this full sense of the word.
The Science of Audio Learning
"We use imagination to achieve whole brain learning, which all children have naturally. We choose audio because it is the least invasive technology we can use and has the added benefit of increasing a child's listening skills โ crucial for formal learning environments."
Neutral, Non-Directive Narration
The narrator is trained to deliver a neutral guide free of emotion or inferences so as to minimise their impact on the listener. The child's own imagination does the creative work โ not the narrator's interpretation.
Calibrated Music and Sound
Music is carefully chosen to relax the brain whilst stimulating it for a temporary increase in learning ability. Sound effects, spacing and silences are all precisely engineered to bring the child into deeper levels of focus.
Building Listening Skills
Audio increases a child's listening skills โ crucial for formal learning environments. In a world saturated with visual media, the ability to listen with sustained attention is increasingly rare and increasingly valuable.
Hollywood Production Standards
The audio programmes are recorded in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California to movie industry standards. The production quality is not cosmetic โ it directly affects the depth of immersion and the effectiveness of the imaginative experience.
Active Brain Engagement
Unlike visual media, which does the creative work for the child, audio requires the brain to actively construct images, environments and characters. This active mental construction is what makes audio inherently more imagination-developing than screen-based content.
Screen-Free Learning
Audio is the least invasive technology available. It creates rich immersive experiences without the visual overstimulation, passive consumption, and physiological arousal associated with screen-based media.
About Ciaran Hope โ Audio Director
ImaginationGYMยฎ audio is directed by Ciaran Hope B.A. BAI. M.Sc., based in Hollywood, LA. Ciaran has composed music scores for Hollywood films and brings the same cinematic quality to every ImaginationGYMยฎ recording. He teaches at UCLA, Trinity College Dublin, and Dublin Institute of Technology.
Creating Relaxation as a Learned Behaviour
"The more chilled we are the better our brain functions. The ImaginationGYMยฎ Methodology sets out to create relaxation as a learned behavior that can be consciously switched on when needed. Practice creates the discipline and self control to detach from stressful thoughts when they begin to become debilitating or impair cognitive functioning."
This is not passive relaxation โ it is an active skill. A child who has practised ImaginationGYMยฎ regularly learns not just to relax during the audio session, but to access that calm, focused state in other demanding situations: before a test, in a difficult social interaction, or when feeling overwhelmed. The methodology builds a genuine, reliable internal resource.
Learned Behaviour
Relaxation is not just experienced during sessions โ it becomes a skill the child can consciously deploy
Practice Creates Discipline
Regular repetition builds the neural pathways that make self-regulation increasingly automatic and reliable
Cognitive Enhancement
The relaxed brain functions better โ memory, creativity, problem-solving and emotional intelligence all improve
Building Emotional Awareness Through Imagination
"Basic emotional awareness is built into the imagination exercises so children can label their emotions and distinguish between different types. The aim is to create a positive attitude to emotional expression. For example in The Enchanted Forest, the child is invited to make three wishes. Over time these wishes often become inverted emotional desires โ clues to the emotional wellbeing of the child."
The methodology takes a gentle, non-prescriptive approach to emotional development. The child does not have to discuss the story unless they wish to โ the emotional work happens within the imaginative space, at the child's own pace and in their own way. This respect for emotional privacy makes the approach safe for children in difficult circumstances.
For practitioners โ teachers, counsellors, therapists โ the imaginative content and choices that emerge during and after sessions can provide valuable information about the child's emotional state. The three wishes in The Enchanted Forest, for example, often reveal what the child most deeply desires or feels is missing โ insights that can guide both educational and therapeutic support.
The Research on Self-Regulation
"Research from Pennsylvania State University (2007) showed young children taught self-regulated behaviour can outperform children of higher IQ in reading, writing and maths."
A study published in Scientific American Mind by Psychologist Clancy Blair showed children taught self-regulated behaviour skills outperformed children of higher IQ in core academic subjects. Self-regulation is now understood to be a more reliable predictor of academic success than raw cognitive ability.
ImaginationGYMยฎ achieves self-regulated behaviour through three mechanisms: respect for peer boundaries (developed through group sessions), increasing periods of sustained attention and focus, and the progressive development of listening skills. These three elements work together to build the internal discipline that makes children effective learners.
